How to size your dining room

• Leave room to pull out chairs. Keep 36 inches between the table edge and the wall, and about 42 to 48 inches where people walk behind seated guests.
• Give each person space. Plan about 24 inches of table width per person. A 60 inch table seats six; a 72 to 84 inch table seats six to eight.
• Pick the shape for the room. Round tables work well in square rooms and small eat-in kitchens. Rectangles fit long rooms. An extendable dining set covers Thanksgiving without crowding the room all year.

For counter seating, choose 24 to 26 inch stools for a 36 inch counter and 28 to 30 inch stools for a 42 inch bar. Add a buffet or sideboard for storage if your kitchen cabinets run short.
