How to choose a dresser

• Dresser or chest. A wide dresser (about 55 to 70 inches) holds more folded clothes and gives you a surface for a mirror. A tall chest (often 30 to 40 inches wide) saves floor space in small rooms.
• Plan drawer clearance. Leave about 36 inches in front so drawers open fully and you can stand in front of them.
• Look at drawer details. Full-extension glides, felt-lined top drawers and anti-tip hardware are worth checking. Always anchor tall pieces to the wall, especially with kids at home.

Many Massachusetts homes have small closets, so a dresser often does double duty for sweaters and winter layers. Mount the mirror so its center sits roughly at eye level, and pair it with nightstands in the same finish.
